The Hokkaido Ken, also known as the Hokkaido Inu, is a rare and ancient breed from Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido. Originally bred by the Ainu people for hunting bears and boars, this medium-sized dog is known for its bravery, loyalty, and ability to withstand harsh winters. It has a muscular build, erect ears, a curled tail, and a thick double coat that comes in various colors like white, black, red, and brindle. Though reserved with strangers, the Hokkaido Ken is deeply devoted to its family and was designated a Natural Monument of Japan in 1937.
